The holiday season is a time for family, friends and, of course, food. While indulging in your favorite holiday dishes is part of the fun, it can also lead to weight gain.

If you’re worried about putting on a few extra pounds this holiday season, follow these tips from nutritionist J.J. Smith.

1. Don’t go to parties hungry.

If you arrive at a party famished, you’re more likely to overeat. Smith recommends eating a light snack before you leave the house, such as an apple with peanut butter or a handful of nuts.

2. Fill up on healthy foods first.

Before you dive into the holiday spread, fill your plate with healthy options like fruits and vegetables. This way, you’ll be less likely to overeat the less healthy items.

3. Avoid processed foods.

Processed foods are often high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. When possible, choose whole foods instead.

4. Don’t drink your calories.

Sugary drinks can add a lot of extra calories to your diet. Stick to water or unsweetened tea and coffee.

5. Be active.

Exercise can help offset some of the extra calories you consume during the holidays. Even just a short walk can make a difference.
